What Makes a Strong Legal Lead

Not every legal lead is worth the same to a firm. For personal injury, mass tort, and other high-value case types, a handful of specific signals do most of the work in separating a case worth pursuing from one that isn't.

Liability Clarity

Cases with clear, well-documented fault — a rear-end collision, a defective product with a known recall — are generally more valuable and easier to evaluate than cases where liability is disputed or unclear. Strong lead qualification asks specifically about how the incident happened, not just that one occurred.

Treatment Status

Whether the claimant has already sought medical treatment, and whether that treatment is ongoing or complete, materially affects both case value and timing. A claimant who hasn't seen a doctor at all is a meaningfully different lead than one with documented treatment and a clear diagnosis.

Statute of Limitations & Timing

How recently the incident occurred matters — cases approaching a statute of limitations deadline need faster attorney review, while very old, unaddressed incidents can raise questions about why the claimant waited. Capturing incident date at the point of intake, not just at delivery, helps firms triage effectively.

Insurance & Financial Recovery Potential

Whether the at-fault party carries insurance, and the applicable policy limits where known, directly affects what's realistically recoverable. Leads that flag insurance status upfront save firms time that would otherwise go to that same discovery work later in intake.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Does case type alone determine lead value?

Case type is a major factor, but liability clarity, treatment status, and timing within it can matter just as much — two leads in the same case type can be worth very different amounts to a firm.

Should firms expect every lead to already have an attorney-ready case summary?

No — qualification criteria capture key signals at intake, but full case evaluation is still the firm's job. The goal of qualification is to filter out cases clearly not worth pursuing, not to replace attorney review.
